Summary

The conference will address to the opportunities and limits for a successful development of health best practice, research and development of knowledge in Italy and in Europe, in order to biopsychosocial approach, and in particular concerning the role and the perspective of the psychodynamic psychology and psychiatry.

The languages will be: English and Italian with simoultaneous translation

The biopsychosocial model (abbreviated “B.P.S.”) is a general model or approach that posits that biological, psychological (which entails thoughts, emotions, and behaviors), and social factors, all play a significant role in human functioning in the context of disease or illness. Indeed, health is best understood in terms of a combination of biological, psychological, and social factors rather than purely in biological terms.

The concept is used in fields such as medicine, nursing, health psychology and sociology, and particularly in more specialist fields such as psychiatry, health psychology, family therapy, chiropractic, clinical social work, and clinical psychology.

Keyword, tags and topics: Biopsychosocial model, clinical practice patterns, personal autonomy, empathy, communication, education, psychology, mental health, psychiatry, psychotherapy, pharmacology, literature and psychoanalysis, music and art therapuy.

Objective and purpose

This Conference aims to involve participants in enabling a fruitful exchange between scientists from the different disciplines of medicine, psychiatry, psychology, psychoanalysis and psychotherapy. It will promote interdisciplinary research in sociology, philosophy and other fields, and allow us all to establish a discourse of the subject that combine the different cultures, societies and scientific fields. The role that interpersonal, group dynamics, cultural, political and societal influences play in this regard will be discussed in two days of parallele sessions of presentations of lectures, papers, poster, communications and symposia.

The purpose of the conference is to generate, disseminate and support best practices, research and production of knowledge within the scientific and humanistic communities, in a multi-level and interdisciplinary approach, in the field of health, which is assessed in terms of biological, psychological and social-cultural models and points of view, to favorite a global comprehension of human condition and to favorite the growth of philosophical and psychological discussion within scientist and professional of health care in Italy and in Europe.

The biopsychosocial model implies that treatment of disease processes, requires that the health care team will address biological, psychological and social influences upon a patient’s functioning. In a philosophical sense, the biopsychosocial model states that the workings of the body can affect the mind, and the workings of the mind can affect the body. This means both a direct interaction between mind and body as well as indirect effects through intermediate factors.

The biopsychosocial paradigm is also a technical term for the popular concept of the mind–body connection, which addresses more philosophical arguments between the biopsychosocial and biomedical models, rather than their empirical exploration and clinical application.

The biological component of the biopsychosocial model seeks to understand how the cause of the illness stems from the functioning of the individual’s body.
The psychological component of the biopsychosocial model looks for potential psychological causes for a health problem such lack of self-control, emotional turmoil, and negative thinking.
The social part of the biopsychosocial model investigates how different social factors such as socioeconomic status, culture, poverty, technology, and religion can influence health.
However, the general B.P.S. model has guided formulation and testing of models within each professional field. Interestingly, evidence for the application of the biopsychosocial model was found in ancient Asian (2600 B.C.) and Greek (500 B.C.) civilizations prior to Engel’s introduction of the theory in 1977. The novelty, acceptance, and prevalence of the biopsychosocial model varies across cultures.

Theodore Millon has extensively researched the Biopsychosocial model and has developed a systematic approach to understanding the clinical presentations found in many treatment settings.

The Conference on 27-28 October 2012 sets the objective of:

linking up scientists, academics, students and health professionals in the field of dynamic psychology and dynamic psychiatry, offering the opportunity for discussion and learning, dissemination and exchange best practices and research perspectives of the biopsychosocial model
favorite the “learning by doing” and experiential learning approach at the best practice for the vocational professional, with discussion in small or large group, with workshop, with multimedia and interdisciplinary equipe, in pre-clinic, clinic and after-clinic observation of case.
The action plan of the conference supports generating the data and scientific opinions that health stakeholders from policy makers to individuals need to be able to make informed decisions. To reach the target, conference methodology requires setting up efficient and user-friendly dissemination channels.

In particular, the work plan of the conference will be focused on:

Theorical and practical state of art about the diseases, like cancer and depression, diabetes and neurological degenerative desease; alcohol and tobacco addiction; panic disorder, depression, anxiety disorder, psychosis and schizophrenia; eating disorders; relation disorders.
Health determinants and risk and protections of health factor in biopsychosocial approach, to promote health and thereby preventing disease, in healthy ageing, too and in a longlife span perspective; to individuate social determinants and health inequalities.

Contributions

The presentations will demonstrate most recent findings and research, best practices and future in the fields of health, illness, trauma, lifelong events, risks and protection factors in developmental as well as research done in the field of education, sociocultural life styles, resources, change and resilience psychology, psychotherapy, psychiatric intervention and pharmacology, in the perspective of the biopsychosocial approach.

Philosophical arguments between the biopsychosocial and biomedical models will be discussed, rather than their empirical exploration and clinical application.

Innovative ideas of the Conference

The conference is based on a completely innovative approach to the development and sharing of knowledge.

First of all, addresses the biopsychosocial paradigm of basic importance for the development of prevention and health promotion, facing it in all its aspects and in particular the research, from the psychodynamic perspective, both in philosophy and humanities area, both in technical-scientific area, opening at the top of observation completely new horizons and expanding the universe of “best practices”.

The convention methodology is based on double level of contributes.

A first one constituted by papers, posters, lectures and symposia concerning the topics.

A second level, based on the innovative concept of “multimedia learning by doing”, over a range of experiential educational interpersonal approach. This methodology will be activate in small or large group of discussion and workshop, with multimedia symposia and virtual participation with on-line technical setting of discussion, art performance and installations, internet platforms and web interactions.

The biopsychosocial model is both a philosophy of clinical care and a practical clinical guide. Philosophically, it is a way of understanding how suffering, disease and illness are affected by multiple levels of organization, from the societal to the molecular. At the practical level, it is a way of understanding the patient’s subjective experience as an essential contributor to accurate diagnosis, health outcomes and humane care – Borrell-Carrio, Suchman and Epstein (2004, p. 576)
